Carson (promo)'s Skills[edit | edit source]
X Swing Dice can be any die between 4 and 20. Swing Dice are allowed to be any integral size between their upper and lower limit, including both ends, and including nonstandard die sizes like 17 or 9. Each player chooses his or her Swing Die in secret at the beginning of the match, and thereafter the loser of each round may change their Swing Die between rounds. If a character has any two Swing Dice of the same letter, they must always be the same size.
Design Notes[edit | edit source]
Carson was created initially on a whim at Origins 1999. There was a promotional "Army of Dorkness" button that two Cheapass employees, with permission of James Ernest, added stats to before buttoning it, similar to the Rikachu button from the next year. The second version of the button, seen illustrated here depicting Carson with a pike (art grabbed from the game Bosworth), has four distinct variations. The first, with about 400 produced, had light blue rings around the button. The second printing, done on a poor quality printer, had grey rings around the button. A third printing with grey rings on a higher quality printer was made later in 1999. The fourth version, released in 2000, was printed (unbuttoned) in Dork Tower issue 10 and featured a copyright notice around the edges of the button.[1] [2] According to an interview with Hunter Jackson:
Right! Carson! Liz Lindsay and I did that one. We happened to have Lou Zocchi's 7-sided die handy and Liz and I just simultaneously counted off 4-5-6-7 as a design idea, which of course fits Carson perfectly. And any set of 4 integers between 4 and 20 along with a swing die is a "legal" design by default.
